iPhoto 6 stops responding when you try to buy a book, prints, calendars, or cards

In some situations iPhoto 6 may become unresponsive (or "hang") after you click the Buy button to order books, prints, calendars, or cards. You see the "connecting to server" message, and it makes no further progress.
In a second variation of this behavior, iPhoto may remain responsive but return you to the main iPhoto window after showing the "connecting to server" message, rather than showing you the order quantity window as it should.
